Greyhounds Rally Past Rockets with Dominant Second Half, 76-69
Camden, Ark - When SAU Tech and ASU Mid-South meet, one thing is always guaranteed — a great game. Saturday's matchup was no exception, as the Greyhounds erased a halftime deficit with a suffocating defensive effort in the second half to defeat the Rockets 76-69.
SAU Tech came out firing in the first half and had an answer for every ASU Mid-South run. The Rockets' consistent offense allowed them to build momentum and carry a nine-point lead into the locker room, putting the Greyhounds in a tough spot heading into halftime.
The tone of the game flipped quickly after the break. ASU Mid-South clamped down defensively, holding SAU Tech to just one point over the first five minutes of the second half. That stretch allowed the Greyhounds to crawl back into the game and completely change the momentum.
Once ASU Mid-South took the lead, they never looked back. The Greyhounds pushed their advantage to double digits on multiple occasions, and it was their relentless defense in the second half that sealed the comeback victory.
SAU Tech was led by Preston Sanders with 23 points. Debrion Broomfield Jr. added 19 off the bench, while Javon Johnson chipped in 13 points, knocking down three of six attempts from beyond the arc.
ASU Mid-South was paced by Dejavius Johnson, who finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. Hugh McFarland and Phillip Tillman each recorded double-doubles to anchor the Greyhounds' effort. McFarland posted 17 points, 10 assists, and seven rebounds, while Tillman added 17 points and 13 rebounds. Braylon Frazier scored 12, Jaxson Yancy finished with seven, and Randy Emerson contributed five points as the Greyhounds' only bench scoring.
Following the game, head coach praised his team's resilience and defensive mindset.
"I'm really proud of our guys for not giving up and continuing to battle," Cody Hastings said. "We changed our mindset at halftime, and it showed with how well we defended in the second half. That defensive effort is what allowed us to complete the comeback."
With the win, ASU Mid-South improves to 17-6 overall and 10-2 in Region play. The Greyhounds will hit the road Monday, February 9, traveling to Harrison, Arkansas, for a makeup game due to winter weather, with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
