GREYHOUNDS CLAIM FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN, ROLL PAST ASU NEWPORT 93–65
NEWPORT, Ark. — ASU Mid-South extended its winning streak to four games Wednesday night, using a dominant second-half surge to defeat system rival ASU Newport 93–65 and open conference play at 1–0.
The matchup remained tight through much of the first half, with both teams trading baskets and momentum swings. But the Greyhounds found separation late in the period, closing on a run to take a 13-point lead into the break.
The Aviators refused to go quietly, capitalizing on several sloppy possessions by ASU Mid-South to trim the lead to just six in the opening three minutes of the second half. That wake-up call sparked the Greyhounds, who responded with their most explosive stretch of the night. Once they settled back into rhythm, ASU Mid-South controlled the remainder of the game, pushing the lead to as many as 30.
Five Greyhounds scored in double figures, led by standout performances from Michael Stewart and Phillip Tillman, who each finished with 19 points. Stewart was lethal from long range, knocking down 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, while Tillman delivered one of the most complete stat lines of the season: 19 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, and 6 steals.
Jaxson Yancy continued his strong perimeter shooting with 16 points, including four threes of his own. Dejavius Johnson added 12 points and collected 7 rebounds, and Hugh McFarland rounded out the double-figure group with 11 points and 5 boards.
Off the bench, Mikell Lewis contributed 7 points, Randy Emerson added 5, and Braylon Frazier and Terence Reamey each chipped in 2.
"I'm proud of the way our guys responded after that early second-half push from Newport. We regrouped, locked in defensively, and played the kind of basketball we know we're capable of. This was a complete team win, and we're excited to keep building on it," said head coach Cody Hastings.
ASU Newport was led by Quentin Dabney Jr., who scored a game-high 22 points. The next closest Aviators were Braylin Green with 8 and Amir Parrimon with 7.
The Greyhounds improve to 7–4 overall and 1–0 in conference play. Saturday's scheduled matchup against North Arkansas College has been postponed. ASU Mid-South will return to action on Wednesday, December 10, traveling to Phillips County to face UA–Phillips in West Helena. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
