Lady Rockets Lock Down Lady Greyhounds in Defensive Battle
Camden, ARK - SAU Tech used a stifling defensive effort and a strong start to hand ASU Mid-South a tough loss early Saturday afternoon, as the Lady Rockets defeated the Lady Greyhounds in a low-scoring, physical battle.
The two teams met for the second time this season after ASU Mid-South took the first meeting back in early January, but this time it was SAU Tech that came out with a purpose. The Lady Rockets' offense was clicking from the opening tip, pouring in 21 points in the first quarter to set the tone.
While SAU Tech's offense sparked the early surge, it was their defense that truly took control in the second quarter. The Lady Rockets held ASU Mid-South to just five points in the period, building a commanding 35-19 advantage heading into the halftime break.
The Lady Greyhounds showed resilience coming out of the locker room, finding their offensive rhythm in the third quarter and cutting the deficit in half. However, SAU Tech weathered the push, and a defensive-minded fourth quarter from both sides kept either team from pulling away until the final minutes, allowing the Lady Rockets to secure the win.
NyAsia Jackson led all scorers for SAU Tech with 18 points. Marniyah Willis and Hannah Wilson each added nine, while J'Honesty Smith chipped in eight.
ASU Mid-South was led by another double-double from Lula-Jae Tranfaglia, who finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Alana Whiten provided a spark off the bench with 10 points, followed by Ka'Mbili Nelson with eight and Shatayla Boyland with seven.
With the loss, the Lady Greyhounds fall to 6-16 overall and 3-5 in Region play. ASU Mid-South will look to bounce back Monday, February 9, when they travel to Harrison, Arkansas, for a makeup game postponed due to the winter storm.
