Lady Greyhounds Fall in Final Seconds to PCCUA, 62–60
Helena- West Helena, ARK - The ASU Mid-South Lady Greyhounds came up just short in a down-to-the-wire battle Wednesday night, falling 62–60 to Phillips Community College–UA in a game that never saw either team pull away by more than a few possessions.
Both squads spent much of the first quarter feeling each other out, trading baskets in a physical, defensive-minded opening period. ASU Mid-South managed to carve out a slight edge, taking a 2-point lead into the first break. PCCUA responded in the second quarter, tightening up defensively and finding enough rhythm on the offensive end to send the game into halftime tied at 20.
After the low-scoring first half, both offenses came alive coming out of the locker room. The Lady Greyhounds and Lady Ridge Runners traded the lead several times in the third quarter, but for the second straight period it was PCCUA who closed stronger, edging ahead by two heading into the final frame.
The fourth quarter delivered the most exciting stretch of basketball, with both teams pushing the pace and executing offensively. ASU Mid-South continued to battle, and with under five seconds remaining, Cadence Irby buried a clutch three-pointer to cut the deficit to 62–60. The Lady Greyhounds quickly attempted to foul on the ensuing inbound, but PCCUA successfully avoided the whistle and dribbled out the final seconds to secure their first conference win of the season.
Mikayla Guess powered the Lady Ridge Runners with a dominant 30-point performance, while Alicia Shabazz controlled the interior with 11 points and a commanding 18 rebounds.
ASU Mid-South was paced by Serenity Austin's 16 points. Irby provided a spark off the bench with 13 points, knocking down three of her five attempts from beyond the arc. Alana Whiten also reached double figures, finishing with 11.
With the loss, the Lady Greyhounds drop to 2–12 overall and 0–2 in conference play. They will look to bounce back on Saturday, December 13, when they travel to Pine Bluff to take on Southeast Arkansas. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
