Lady Greyhounds Fall in Conference Opener to North Arkansas, 74–51
West Memphis, ARK - The ASU Mid-South Lady Greyhounds opened Region 2 play on Saturday but were unable to overcome North Arkansas' relentless defensive pressure, falling 74–51 on the road.
ASU Mid-South came out strong, holding a 2-point lead after the first quarter, showing poise and execution on both ends of the floor. But the momentum quickly shifted in the second period. North Arkansas ramped up its pressure, swarming passing lanes and speeding up the Greyhound offense. The Lady Greyhounds managed just six points in the quarter, allowing the Lady Pioneers to take a 34–25 halftime lead.
The third quarter mirrored the competitive opening frame, with both teams trading baskets and defensive stops. Yet North Arkansas found just enough separation late in the period to extend its lead to 12 entering the fourth.
From there, turnovers proved to be the ultimate difference. The Lady Pioneers forced 30 ASU Mid-South turnovers, converting them into a staggering 32 points off turnovers. Despite both teams struggling from the field, North Arkansas controlled the interior battle, outscoring the Lady Greyhounds 34–16 in the paint.
Offensively, ASU Mid-South was led by Alana Whiten, who poured in 22 points to keep the Greyhounds within striking distance. Lula-Jae Tranfaglia delivered another impressive effort, recording a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds, including 11 offensive boards. Serenity Austin and Areinna Manson contributed nine points each.
North Arkansas countered with a balanced scoring attack. Keely Blanchard led the Lady Pioneers with 18 points and a game-high six steals, sparking the defensive effort that turned the tide. Addie Overturff added 15, while A.J. Person scored 10 to round out their double-digit scorers.
With the loss, the Lady Greyhounds fall to 2–11 overall and 0–1 in Region 2 play. ASU Mid-South will look to bounce back on Wednesday, December 10, as they travel to West Helena to face PCCUA. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
