On Thursday, November 6, the MSCC Greyhounds lost on the road to Northwest Mississippi 105-79, but head coach Chris Parker was not deterred.
After that contest, Parker said that he was confident that his Greyhounds were more than capable of beating that team.
He was right. MSCC rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit to force overtime, before stopping Northwest Mississippi at home by a 98-89 final that brings the Greyhounds' record to 6-4.
MSCC dominated the overtime period 15-6, finishing the game on a monster 56-34 run that spanned the second half and extra period.
Little Rock Hall product Kaylon Tappin hit for a game-high 32 points on 11 of 23 shooting, including 10 of 11 from the free throw line to pace the home team while also leading the team with 15 rebounds.
Tasmania Jones was big for MSCC as well, also tallying a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds while also adding in a pair of steals. Sophomore Justin Harris added 10 points and nine rebounds as well.
MSCC dominated the glass, outrebounding Northwest Mississippi 68-47 as each team shot less than 40% for the game.
The Greyhounds turned the ball over 10 times in a lopsided first half, while being whistled for 19 fouls, and Northwest Mississippi (6-2 overall) had 27 rebounds to 24 for MSCC at the break.
The script flipped after halftime, however. MSCC hit the glass for a 32-14 edge in that department, while Tappin went for 16 points and eight rebounds during that period.
MSCC guard Shaquille Culbreath helped stifle the visitors on the final play of regulation that would have given Northwest Mississippi a win, and a season sweep of the Greyhounds, and Jones and Tappin hit for six points apiece in the extra period to push MSCC to a crucial home victory.
The Greyhounds are off until Saturday, December 6, when they travel to play Western Kentucky in Paducah. They will return home on Saturday, December 13 when they host St. Louis at approximately 4 p.m.
