A 16-5 run helped overcome a 7-point halftime deficit as the Greyhounds held on at the end for an 80-76 victory over the North Arkansas College Pioneers Saturday at The Dog House in West Memphis.
After giving up the first basket of the second half to make it 46-36 with 19:44 left, Kylon McCullough's transition layup gave the Greyhounds their first lead of the game at 52-51 with 15:55 remaining. The Pioneers would take the lead back at the 12:55 mark 57-56, but the Greyhounds fought back to take the lead for good at the 9:14 mark on a Jordan Rainey three-pointer. North Arkansas cut the lead to three points on several occasions but ASU Mid-South would not let them closer than that.
Kylon McCullough led the charge for the Greyhounds and came close to the program's second triple-double in school history scoring 22 points with 10 rebounds and 7 assists to go with 5 steals. Sam Smith went for 15 points and 10 boards for his eighth double-double of the season to move into second place for most double-doubles in a season. Spencer Simes scored 12 points, and Jeremiah Jones and Jordan Rainey chipped in 8 points each.
The Greyhounds (14-4, 6-3) held the Pioneers to 7-of-26 shooting (26.9%) from the three-point line and won the battle of the boards 47-40 while also capitalizing on 18 Pioneer turnovers compared to only 13 for ASU Mid-South.
The win clinches the #2-seed for the Region Tournament which begins April 3 which comes with a first-round bye and the advantage of hosting the semifinal game on Wednesday, April 7, at 6:00pm. The winner of that will advance to the Region Championship Game on Saturday, April 10, at 2:00pm.
