Playing the 7th-ranked team in the nation to open the season, the Greyhounds found themselves in an early hole and made a valiant comeback before succumbing to Parkland College 75-57 in the Greyhound Tipoff Classic.
After finding themselves down 45-22 at the half, the Greyhounds stepped up the defense in the second half to cut the lead to single digits on two occasions, but the Cobras first-half bite was too deep despite the Greyhounds holding the visitors to only 30 second-half points. Hurting the Greyhounds cause was a 2-for-22 effort from the three-point line and just under 59% from the free throw line.
Freshman K.J. Patrick led the Greyhounds with 16 points and seven rebounds while going a perfect 7-for-7 from the field, and freshman Dee Montgomery chipped in 12 points. Two other freshmen, Terrandus Smith and Montee Randle, finished with seven points and six points, respectively.
The Greyhounds take on Blue Mountain College JV Saturday at 2:00pm while Parkland plays North Arkansas College in the first game at noon.
